Hung Leng Kuen Kung Fu - Testimonials

Here are some in depth, personal accounts of students of this martial art describing it in their own words/talking about how it has impacted them.

Joining Hung Leng Kuen is one of the few impulsive freshers week decisions I have never regretted. Since joining because “Kung Fu was pretty cool in kung fu panda”, I’ve found a brilliant community of lifelong friends and incredibly knowledgeable and friendly instructors which has developed what I expect will be a lifelong fascination in martial arts while massively enriching my social experience at university.

Coming to a British university from abroad wasn’t easy at first, but when I joined the Hung Leng Kuen Kung Fu classes they allowed me to practice a discipline I love as well as meeting great people. The teachers are very passionate and knowledgeable, and the martial art spans from practical applications of self defense to tai chi and traditional kung fu. I definitely think there is something for everyone, as well as a diverse community.

What attracted me at the start was the self-defence focus of all training — it felt much better doing a “sport” that actually serves a purpose. I started with Kung Fu, and very quickly started doing Tai Chi as well, which was a perfect escape from all the crap you have to deal with in the day-to-day of uni. If you show interest in the martial art, the instructors will notice, and will help you improve — even if that means pushing you a bit harder sometimes. For me that was great motivation, but even if I hadn’t trained seriously I would have had plenty of reason to stick around for the community (although still sad we didn’t get to do the hot wings challenge before I left).
